Blood gas analysis, or arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis, is a test which measures the amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, as well as the acidity (pH) of the blood. Readouts for this type of testing can range from partial pressure of oxygen in the arterial blood, percentage of hemoglobin saturated with oxygen, carbon dioxide present in the arterial blood, etc., which all contribute to the animal’s acid-base balance. Results can also indicate the efficiency of lungs, kidneys and the ability of the heart to function correctly for the proper exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
